alarmed by the e-mails, she called the fbi. those friends also tell us the general's wife, holly petraeus, is furious with her husband. you see her here at his confirmation hearings back in august of 2011, broadwell sitting just a few seats away. petraeus insists they weren't having an affair then, which leads us to the first big question -- when did the affair begin? petraeus' friends claim it started around november 2011, two months after he took over the cia, an important point, since he could be tried under military law for adultery. >> it didn't begin when he was in the army. >> reporter: but many who know the general suspect it began months earlier in afghanistan. it was september 2010 that broadwell made her first of six visits to petraeus in the warzone after being granted extraordinary access to write the book about him. >> when i was in kabul, we would do a lot of interviews on runs. for him, i think it was a good distraction from the war. >> reporter: question two -- when did the fbi get involved? it was around may or june that the fbi was tracing those threatening e-mails sens

marital affair. tara merger joins us from washington. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. jill kelly a long time friend of the petraeus family apparently went to the fbi several months ago with her concerns and that led o to a revelation about the affair. and now congressments more information about the fbi's investigate. >> reporter: cbs has learned this girl, jill kelly triggered an investigation leading to the resignation of david petraeus. petraeus resigned friday after word got out he was having an affair with his biographer paula broadwell. his resignation caught many off guard. kelly went to the fbi after allegedly receiving e-mails from broadwell warning her to back off and stay away from my guy. officials say broadwell believed kelly was a romantic rival. broadwell made this comment about petraeus during a publicity tour. >> i think he has been a terrific role model for young people. >> reporter: congressional leaders say they are going to start an inquiry of their own. >> this is something that could have had an effect on national security. i think we should have been told.

petraeus' biographer about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. let's take a listen. >> i don't know if a lot of you heard this, but the cia an annex had taken a couple prisoner and they think the attack on the consulate was an attempt to get the prisoners back. that's still being vetted. >> where did she hear that? did it come from david petraeus and do we know if her claim was true, the cia was holding captives inside a consular annex in benghazi? >> right, ted. this raises serious issues. she clearly said in the video the information she was sharing on libya and the cia holding prisoners there hadn't been vetted. so that means she is sharing something with -- that she heard with a public audience. that's concerning because they have to ask, what is your source? is the source of all of her information david petraeus? given her extraordinary access to the former director of the cia, it would have been a reasonable assumption. but, again, her access to him was not in any way in an official capacity. though she did tell me she was working with the general on writing a

williams. he's been following this for us. pete, let's talk about the time line here. this happened right before the benghazi hearings. petraeus is supposed to have testified at those hearings on thursday. critics are questioning, why are we hearing about all of this later rather than sooner? >> what the fbi and the justice department say is that in the middle of this investigation -- and you have to remember, this starts out with an allegation that had nothing to do with david petraeus, it was thought. this was a woman in tampa, a volunteer at the joint command down there, who goes to an fbi agent who's a friend of hers and says, i'm getting these weird e-mails that are threatening and intimidating. it looked to her initially like they were coming from more than one person because they were sent from more than one e-mail account. so the fbi opens an investigation into a potential cyber crime, a potential sort of cyber stalking case. that's how it all got started in late september. now, during that month and a half or so that the fbi is investigating this, it has to discover who the e-mai
